Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) is made up of a diverse network of around 30,000 professionals who are committed to advancing microbiology.

Our challenge was to evolve the original 1977 FEMS logo into a design that reflected the diverse microbiology community. Inspired by nature’s pentagon shape, we crafted a logo that represented FEMS’s five pillars of Engagement, Education, Business, Research, and Policy. For the FEMS Journals, we sampled Mark Rothko’s expressionistic ‘fields of colour’ paintings to provide a scientifically based spectrum for each of the seven covers. The culmination of our rebranding was the FEMS2023 Congress in Hamburg, Europe’s largest microbiology event of the year. This ambitious project included designing two main exhibition stands, the ‘selfie corner,’ signage throughout the venue, digital screens, visitor badges, and a handy folding programme. With strategic planning and creativity, we brought FEMS’s mission to life, engaging over 1,800 attendees from more than 70 countries in the microbiology community.

The Creative (spark): we reimagined the FEMS brand identity by blending science and design, from the pentagon-shaped logo to Rothko-based colour palettes

The Fit (oxygen): integrating seamlessly with FEMS’s event team, we managed both the creative and production side of their Hamburg Congress.

The Purpose (fuel): we co-created an impactful congress experience that elevated FEMS’s visibility, fostered stronger connections within the field, and inspired professionals to unite.
